What Is TMS Therapy?

TMS stands for ‘Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation’.

TMS is a type of electromagnetic therapy indicated for use in people with major depressive disorder who have not responded to at least two antidepressant medications.

TMS has been recommended by the American Psychiatric Association since 2010.

What Is TMS Therapy Used For?

BrainWell psychiatry offers TMS therapy for depression.

TMS For Depression

TMS is most commonly used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), also known simply as depression.

TMS is typically recommended for individuals who haven't found relief through medication and psychotherapy, a condition referred to as treatment-resistant depression, which affects about 30 percent of people with depression.

TMS For OCD

The FDA approved TMS for OCD in 2018. TMS is recommended if a person with OCD hasn’t responded to medication and psychotherapy.

People with OCD often have excessive activity between the prefrontal cortex and striatum areas of the brain. This extra activity is associated with severe OCD symptoms.

TMS can be used to reduce some of the activity in this part of the brain, reducing the symptoms of OCD.

Research has found that many people respond to TMS therapy.

Is TMS Right For Me?

TMS Might be the right choice for you if you answer “YES” to any of the following:

  • Current medication doesn’t seem to be working

  • Side effects on your current medication

  • Have tried medications in the past that did not work

  • Only a partial response to medications

TMS therapy may be right for you if you are not getting full relief from their current medication.

BrainWell Psychiatry offers TMS treatment for adolescents.

Now Accepting Referrals For Adolescent TMS Therapy

TMS is now FDA-cleared for adolescents (ages 15-21) who are struggling with depression.

At BrainWell Psychiatry, we understand how difficult it is to watch your teenager face depression and feel like other treatments haven’t helped enough. While we don’t provide ongoing general psychiatric care for adolescents, we are pleased to accept referrals from child and adolescent psychiatrists for TMS therapy.

If your child’s psychiatrist believes TMS could be a helpful option, we partner closely with them to deliver this treatment safely and effectively. BrainWell does not replace your teen’s regular psychiatrist — instead, we coordinate care to make the process seamless and supportive for your family.

Our goal is to give adolescents and their families new hope through an evidence-based depression treatment that does not involve medication and has been shown to help teens when other options haven’t worked.
